Akamon

Akamon can be found nearly in the center of the University of Tokyo. Behind it are the Yasuda Koudo building and the Sanshiro Ike, a pond, named after the novel of the famous writer Soseki Natsumei.

Aka means red or vermillion in Japanese and was a color often used by the Tokugawa Shoguns for their buildings. Gate meansMon and it is of course logical to call this elegant structure Akamon.  It is now one of the gates of the University of Tokyo, and designated as a National Important Cultural Asset, however its initial purpose was quite different and of a more romantic nature.

Maeda Nariyasu, the head of the the Kaga clan married the daughter of the thirteenth Shogun, Tokugawa Ienari and had Akamon constructed to welcome his new bride. It was built between 1825 and 1828.
