Kanda River - Tokyo Tourist Guide

The Kanda River as it is called is in fact not a river at all. It a manmade canal dug under the orders of Tokugawa Iemitsu and it splits the high land around Kanda in two parts. It was dug in 1638  to supply the city with its most needed water.  This project became known as the "Kanda Josui" or Kanda Waterworks.

Before the Kanda River was dug, the area was a large plateau. After it had been constructed the river ran through a deep valley with fairly steep walls in what became Ochanomizu, literally "Tea water". It is believed that this neighborhood got its name because the water used to make "Ocha", or tea, for the Shogun was taken there.

South of the Kanda River is the Kanda-Surugadai area, where samurai from Sunpu, now Shizuoka Prefecture, after the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu, got permission to settle. It often called just Surugadai or Sundai

To the north is the Yushima area where nearly from the beginning of the Edo period the center of learning has existed. The Confucian Temple of Learning, the Yushima Seido, famous the Yushima Tenjin, the Kanda Myoujin Shrine, and the Russian Orthodox Church the Nikolaido can still be found in this area. More upstream the river flows past Sekiguchi Bashoan and Chinzanso.
