Nezu  is located west of Ueno Park, which was actually the Kan-ei-ji temple complex during the Edo Era. It is most known for its shrine that was established by Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a legendary priest.

The structures that can still be viewed in their original state date back to 1705. They were built by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the 5th Tokugawa Shogun.

Present-day Nezu is mainly residential and borders Tokyo University, or Tokyo Daigaku, that lies to the west. Nezu belongs of Yanesen (Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi) an area that has been called Tokyo's most charming district which still reflects part of the atmosphere of historical Edo.
