Bunkyo-ku

Bunkyo is one of the twenty-three wards of Tokyo and it was created in 1947 when Hongo and Koishikawa were combined. It is located on the eastern edge of the Musashino Plateau.

The name "Bunkyo-ku"  means "Culture-ward" and its name says it all. It is widely seen as the academic and intellectual center of Tokyo. In fact it has been the the cultural and intellectual center since The Shohei-Zaka Academic Institute was established during the Edo Period. Since then this area has attracted many great writers and scholars.

Bunkyo Tokyo

This is also where Todai, or Tokyo University, and other major universities, galleries, printing and publishing companies are located. Nevertheless the bigger area has stayed mainly residential with an abundance of temples and shrines, beautiful parks, stunning botanical gardens. Because of this it is a very pleasant area to walk around in. For visitors who would like to stay longer in this area there is a wide choice of Japanese Ryokans as well as western style hotels. For dining the choices among traditional and modern Japanese restaurants an international establishments are nearly unlimited.

Bunkyo is quite a hilly part of Tokyo. Of the 433 hills in Tokyo, 133 can be found in Bunkyo. Since most hills form their own communities that date back to the Edo Era they reflect a lot of the city's colorful past.
